We’re biased of course, but who better to commemorate in this fashion than Laurel and Hardy! You may know that Walt Disney became a friend of Stan and Babe as well as their boss Hal Roach, having assigned his animators to watch Laurel & Hardy and Chaplin films to help them learn the comedy movements and expressions of the renowned pantomimists and adapt these to his cartoons.įrom a splendid upcoming article by our friend Tracy Tolzmann (scheduled to appear in The Intra-Tent Journal) Mike noted that in 1933, Stan and Ollie, Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo and many popular stars of the silver screen appeared in Mickey’s Gala Premier and in 1936, Mickeys Polo Team again had appearances of cartoon Stan and Ollie (along with several others).īeyond this though, Disney allowed the production of personalised commemorative items that would be presented to visiting dignitaries, politicians, celebrities and the like.

Perhaps we should start by viewing the emblem of the Laurel and Hardy appreciation society, ‘The Sons of the Desert’, which was drawn by Cartoonist Al Kilgore, a founder member of the Sons in 1965. Of course, if any reader can identify anything we haven’t been able to, please let Mike know at and he will add the necessary detail to the image. And in doing so, our gratitude to everyone who has sent in an example (or seven, in some cases – you know who you are folks!) in that spirit, while also thanking each and every artist that have spent their time in the creation of their own homage to Stan Laurel and Oliver ‘Babe’ Hardy. So, we share these in the true spirit engendered by Laurel and Hardy – that of friendship, humour and mutual respect, but above all as an homage to our heroes. There will be many of the below that you too will have seen before, but Mike’s thinking is that there may well be several that are ‘new’ to you too. So, what follows are already ‘out there’, in the resolution and format you will see and its is perhaps fair to assume that many have indeed already seen them online. That said, everything that appears in the galleries below has been obtained as it appeared on the interweb – not ‘cropped’ in any way by us – be it from social media, Google images or whatever.

In that instance, our sincere and full apologies, as this has been uploaded in good faith and in ignorance of that fact.
